Sustainability
Our response to our own environmental impact is an ongoing project that we revisit on a regular basis.
We use recycled metals at all times and where there is an alternative option to sending waxes away for casting (which has a greater carbon footprint), we take it and sand cast in the studio instead. We use kinder options wherever possible, e.g citric acid instead of chemical pickle, a greener energy supplier, reworking and re-using previous work and choosing to have no plastic in our packaging.
We collect the seaweed that forms the basis of our collections from the high tideline where the broken strands lie, just a couple of miles from the studio. We take no living seaweed. For the most part the ‘gems’ used in our pieces are reworked seaglass, collected along with the seaweed. These beautiful pieces have their own colourful histories and we aim to continue their journey by transforming from waste into desirability. We prefer not to use any new mined gemstones. Just occasionally we use rough sapphires and rough zircons in our cast in place jewellery and these are entirely traceable to the person who panned them in the river in Australia. Obviously there is a sustainability issue in bringing gemstones from another country but that environmental cost is shared between all the items that were in that transportation. It is a difficult line to walk and this is why we return to our policy regularly and continue to assure you that we will always do the best we can to manage our impact.
Please see our Bespoke service if you would like us to work with your own precious heirloom jewellery. In the interest of circularity we are also happy to rework previous items bought from us, reusing metals to make a new piece for you.
